These days, even the most outrageous conspiracy theories are more apt to be based in truth than in fantasy. The perennial comparison of the UFOs that have caused so much debate and action by governments and military establishments throughout the decades is due for a major update. The Lockheed Hercules, originally flown by the US Air Force and other countries, was a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft, capable of hovering and of homing in on remote targets. First seen as weapons delivery platforms, the first Australian one was flown in 1970 and eight more followed. The six that could be examined by the Australian Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) over the last six years have provided important information on the origins of the craft.
The remaining two craft, and those from other countries, could only be examined in the late 1980s, by the British Ministry of Defence, using time-honoured methods. In the 1970s, the craft had a bulbous shape, 12m long and weighing 13 tonnes, with a bubble-like surface that suggested an outer skin. More-unusual things have appeared in the sky since then, such as the so-called ‘Dragon’, a long, cigar-shaped craft, and the ‘Pegasus’, also cigar-shaped, but with wings. The sightings of these and other similar craft prompted some to claim these are US experimental aircraft that have been modified by their owners to avoid detection. A 1971 incident involving two such craft near Groombridge in Hampshire is consistent with this, and in many other recent sightings, a sudden appearance of an unearthly craft can be the result of three or four aircraft flying in formation being mistaken for one. The Australian Air Force no longer uses its Hercules craft and the DSTO is now examining other craft which have been on file in the DSTO’s archives since the 1980s.
Australian analysts of the 1970s-era sightings had concluded that the crafts were probably the same as the helicopters and jets seen for so many years in places like the Coral Sea, the UK and West Africa. But those experts were wrong. The Hercules, with its bulbous shape and the bubble-like surface, is distinctly different, and should be studied in its
